The Medical Faculty of Fez has proceeded  following deep discussions, to establish the Heritage Committee since October 2013, which is chaired by Moulay Hassan Farih, Honorary Dean of the Medical Faculty on the margins of the first meeting for the History of Medicine in order to shed light on what our grandparents have offered us in both, cultural and medical field, and to assess the value of Intangible Cultural Heritage as stipulated in His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s speech to the nation, on Wednesday 30th July 2014, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Sovereign's accession to the Throne of His Glorious Ancestors.

This committee has set goals for conducting studies on the History of Medicine, translating some rare books and valuable manuscripts, suggesting medical thesis, creating museum on History of medicine, and also contributing to the promotion of identity and strengthening the sense of belonging by organizing scientific international conferences and seminars on the most prominent achievements in our Arab Islamic civilization.

The Medical Faculty has been organizing meetings and scientific conferences about the history of medicine in October of each year in commemoration of the golden anniversary of the inauguration of the medical faculty by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in the 20th of October 1999, making it an annual meeting on national and international levels dating back to the most prominent evolutions in medical sciences.

The Medical Faculty has held six congresses; the first one was about « History of Medicine in Fez», the second on «The history of Hospitals in Morocco and al-Andalous », and the third one about « History of epidemics in Morocco ». In the fourth, we had the honor of having the congress under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which was held jointly with the 7th International Congress of the International Society for the History of Islamic Medicine (ISHIM), whereas the fifth revolved around « History of Psychiatry in Muslim heritage », the sixth congress was also under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, with the main topic of: History of Surgery in Muslim Heritage.

This experience is very special and unique of its kind in the Kingdom of Morocco, which is developing partnerships with many national and international scientific institutions.

The aim of all of this is to make sure that the messages behind the lectures delivered by experts would have a significant impact on all students and interested researchers. And praise be to God, as this forum has become an annual meeting to link the present with the past and make the Kingdom of Morocco and the city of Fez, the scientific capital of the Kingdom internationally enlightened.

The website of the Heritage committee is all about networking, sharing resources, and promoting our noble mission hand by hand with our partners. Your thoughts and ideas are most welcome.

Pr. Sidi Adil Ibrahimi,
Dean of the Faculty of medicine of Fez.
